I don’t even usually like mysteries, and I don’t have a sense of suspense, so it is surprising how much I love this book, but that’s probably why the social aspect was more striking to me.
And the more I sit with the ending, the more I like it. And Harriet finds herself ensnared in a nightmare of romance and terror, with only the tiniest shreds of clues to challenge asyers powers of detection, and those of her paramour, Lord Peter Wimsey.

I like that, even though it was frustrating for my more pedestrian brain. There are a lot of saywrs things about Esther, but also some really fascinating things. Books by Dorothy L. That’s the whole mystery: It’s a book for rereading, I think. Miss Pyke Nina Edwards Harriet and I have made the right choices. If you have, and still think pages about Harriet and Peter working out their complicated and fascinating relationship would be interesting, you need to read Strong Poison again and pay attention this time.
Seriously had to fan myself a few times during scenes between Peter and Harriet. The mystery is certainly intriguing, but what really speaks to me about Gaudy Night is its investigation into different ideas of marriage and of woman’s place in the world.
