While she spent some time trying to be a grown-up on the streets of NYC when she was just an adolescent, she ultimately went to college and discovered political movements fighting for Black liberation. For years after Shakur’s escape, the movements, activities and phone calls of her friends and relatives—including her daughter walking to school in upper Manhattan—were monitored by investigators in an attempt to ascertain her whereabouts.
There is plenty of government and police corruption to back up her claims, but don’t look for all the gory details here. This was a wonderful read.

The short version of her story is that she was a former Black Panther and BLA member, convicted of murdering a New Jersey state trooper under highly dubious circumstances. They certainly aren’t planning to put white people autobiographj them. The recording was released in response to the New Jersey Turnpike Shooting.
It’s the only way that makes sense to me, as what I love about Shakur is her constant promotion of love, of communication, of a fundamental “emotional” grounding of sociopolitical thought that is the antithesis of the ever abusive and ever splintering patriarchy.
A mix of simple and intellectual English gives the book an atmosphere of both sophistication and emotion that can be chilling.
